Rianna knelt at the boy's side. He was close to dying, she could see that, but she was determined to do anything she could to forestall that outcome. She hadn't come all this way to let one of her first patients slip. Setting her medical bag next to the bed, she touched his forehead lightly, then clasped her hands together. Bowing her head, Rianna began to pray. "Lord, please turn Your loving eye on this child in need of Your aid, and help me to be Your instrument in doing anything that can be done to save him," she murmured. "In Your name I pray. Ame-"

Rianna. Startled, she trailed off, her eyes still closed. Rianna. A warm light beat upon the insides of her eyelids as she strained to hear a whispering voice that seemed to wrap around the inside of her head.Rianna.

A shape was forming out of the voice, writhing along the edges of her consciousness - the angel's wings were edged in gold, the face ineffably gentle, and the arms stretched towards her.Rianna. She clenched her fingers together and concentrated, tears flowing down her cheeks.

What do you want? Rianna tried to ask, unknowing whether she spoke aloud or not. The angel's mouth moved, but no sound save her name sang through Rianna's mind.Rianna. Suddenly its lovely eyes widened, looking over her shoulder. The form seemed to whirl apart rapidly, flowing into Rianna, spinning her about, and then rushing out.

Rianna screamed as she opened her eyes and the shot rang out.

The bullet went wild, punching a hole in the wall behind her; the gun was in the hand of a surprised looking young man, who happened to be falling backwards with a sizeable smoking hole in his chest. Rianna looked down at her arms that outstretched towards him.

She continued to scream.
